Recognizing that Canadian media has the power to shape conversations about sexual violence, we want to celebrate insightful and challenging media reporting on sexual violence in the past year. We are launching the Use The Right Words: Reporting on Sexual Violence Awards on December 8th – and we invite you to participate!

To get involved, just nominate articles and authors in the Canadian media at the local, regional or national level (e.g. Globe and Mail, Buzzfeed, Chatelaine, National Post, Toronto Star, Vice, Huffington Post, Vancouver Sun, Ottawa Citizen, etc.) that you think are deserving of one or more of the following awards:

Use The Right Words: Reporting on Sexual Violence Awards

  1. Super Sleuth – Best Investigative Article
  2. Survivors Know Best: Best First Person Narrative
  3. We Begin by Listening: Best Interview
  4. We Revolt at Dawn – Best Overall Article
  5. Desk Flip – Worst Overall Article and Author.

To nominate an article for an award go to here and submit your choices. The nominations will be open from December 8th 2016 – January 21st 2017.

Awards will be conferred on February 1st, 2017, the anniversary of the Ghomeshi trial. The awards are organized by femifesto, Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women (OCTEVAW), Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres, and Office of Sexual Violence Support and Education at Ryerson University.

We hope you can be part of the online awards that day by sharing the award images we create on social media with the hashtag #UseTheRightWords starting on December 8th. We also want to encourage advocates to do a local media analysis and give out their own awards in these categories. We are happy to supply you with certificates for the awards. Please contact us at info@femifesto.ca for support with coordinating local awards.
The awards show on Feb 1st will be happening in various locations across Canada. Details to be announced January 2017. Thank you for supporting a dialogue on sexual violence in Canada!
